European School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies

The European School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies (ESVPS) is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2003 by a group of likeminded veterinarians. The ESVPS Certificates have been designed to meet the needs of busy veterinary professionals wanting to a gain a post-graduate qualification but without having to take excessive time out of their working routine.

ESVPS has seen over 2200 veterinary professionals, across fifteen countries, gain the title of General Practitioner Certificate and a further 1500 veterinarians have completed one of 12 OCQ(v) certificates with ESVPS in the past fourteen months.

The ESVPS accreditation ensures that a course provider running a GPCert modular programme meets the strict requirements in terms of the quality of the course content and the lecturers on the course.

The uniqueness of the ESVPS Certificate is that through the modular training programmes candidates are given structured taught sessions from experienced professionals, which the final examination is based on. Candidates are required to complete further study and course work in their own time and guidance and assistance is available throughout the taught course.

In 2012 ESVPS collaborated with Harper Adams University in Shropshire. This collaboration gives vets enrolled on number of the ESVPS Certificate programmes the option to sit a University supervised examination. Successful candidates will receive a Postgraduate Certificate awarded by Harper Adams University as well as a General Practitioner Certificate awarded by ESVPS.

The General Practitioner Certificate qualifications are positioned at Level 7 (Masters) within the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) framework and carry 60 academic transferable credits at this level.

Public Health England - The Tick Recording Scheme

The Tick Recording Scheme (TRS), set up by Public Health England (PHE) in 2005 is the only scheme that records tick distributions on a national scale.

Tick samples sent to us are identified and provide us with valuable information on the distribution and abundance of the various species present across the UK, their seasonal activity and their host associations.

Ticks and their animal host play important roles in disease transmission cycles so it is important for us to understand these relationships.

The scheme helps PHE to monitor how these may be changing and if they are, to investigate the reasons why this may be occurring. The TRS also allows us to detect the presence of species that are not normally resident in the UK. Data from the TRS helps to inform PHEs assessments of the public health impact of ticks.
